Example tours

Profitis Elias, alt. 695m.
(feast at the monastery: July 19)

The highest point of Sifnos, amazing monastery with great history, secret rooms and catacombs, incredible view of the whole island and the islands around!

It’s about an hour and half to get to the top and we come back the same way but if you aren’t used to walking, you’d better choose another tour!

Special tip

Check the weather! It is disappointing when you can’t see anything after you have gone up all the way! A clear atmosphere with northern winds is the best. A very hot day and southern winds are on the other hand the worst!

Agios Sostis
(feast at the monastery: Sept. 6)

Through the village of Artemonas and through an ancient very well preserved stone footpath, church next to the sea and the most important, remains of the ancient gold mines.

It’s not a difficult walking, it takes a bit more than an hour to get there and a little more to come back the same or another way.

Special tip

Many chances of meeting farmers or cattle-breeders on donkeys or mules. They will be glad to talk to you – even if they don’t know English – and answer your questions!

Agios Ioannis Mavro Chorio – Vathi
(feast at the monastery: August 28)

Through the protected area of the west island, hospitable monastery and many other around, agriculture areas, end up in Vathi where you can stay for lunch or swimming. It takes about one hour and half to reach Agios Ioannis and almost the same time to get to Vathi. Easy footpath for anybody, offering a view of the most unspoilt area in Sifnos.

Special tip

It's worth seeing an area as it has been for hundreds or thousands of years before "development" changes it. A new road which has already been planned is going to change the scene in a few years... The very well equipped monastery offers you the opportunity to talk in details about the traditional religious feasts of Sifnos.

Poulati – Kastro – Faros

East part of the island, the "killers rock" and wild beauty, lovely church, view of Kastro on the way, end up to Faros beach. In front of you the most important church of the island "Panagia Chrysopigi".

The tour lasts a little more than two hours and in spite of ups and downs it is not difficult for anybody to follow. At the end you can stay in Faros for a Greek "ouzo with meze" or keep walking to Chysopigi. Both places are also nice for swimming.

Special tip

With a little extra charge you can also have a 45’ tour in the village of Kastro which is an open museum with 4000 years of history or you can just have a Sifnos sweet and a "coffee break" at a traditional café in the village!
